Founder of the Republic of Turkey

Volumes have been written about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s life and leadership skills in the early years of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.  Although this website is kept brief, please see Books and Articles about Atatürk for more information.

Following Turkey’s War of Independence, peace negotiations were held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in November 1922. Turkish representatives did not accept any discussion that would compromise Turkey’s self-government and its borders, including the Dardanelle straits. The result was the Treaty of Lausanne, signed on 24 July 1923, which recognized the new nation of Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk announced the Republic of Turkey on 29 October 1923.

The 29th of October is celebrated every year by all Turks, throughout and beyond Turkey, with all the celebration, pride, and remembrance that a nation can express to themselves and the world.
