The Republic of Turkey Today

Today, the Republic of Turkey is a republican parliamentary democracy, with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Centrally-located Ankara is its capital (see Map 13).

From 1922 until his death in 1938, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk transformed Turkey in its entirety from the archaic and complicated Ottoman administration to a modern, secular nation with westernized legal, economic, social, educational, and cultural programs.  Turkey’s legal system is based on various European systems, primarily the Swiss civil code.
