Conquest of the Byzantine Empire

By 1451 AD, a succession of sultans increased the Ottoman Empire deeper into Europe, Greece, and Anatolia (see Map 7). In 1453 AD, Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, and renamed it Istanbul.

Another turning point in history, the fall of Constantinople is considered to be the end of the Middle Ages and the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Renaissance, as fleeing Byzantine scholars carried their ideas of art, literature, and science to European cities. The loss of European access to the east through Constantinople also launched the Age of Exploration as new trade routes were needed.
