Rise of the Ottoman Empire

Osman I’s son (Orhan I) greatly increased the kingdom’s realm, seizing more of the Byzantine Empire’s territory (see purple area in Map 6). By the 1360s, Ottoman Turks expanded their rule throughout Anatolia, from the Black Sea to the Aegean Sea, and into southeast Europe. They were on the doorstep of Constantinople, the capital of the declining Byzantine Empire.

Osman I’s grandson (Murad I) continued to expand the empire in terms of territory and organization. Murad I is credited with structuring the Ottoman kingdom into an empire by adopting the title system of Sultan for its rulers, organizing a government based on law, founding civil and military institutions, and establishing an elite, disciplined army called the Janissaries.
