The Decline of the Seljuk Turk Empire

Throughout the 1100s and 1200s, Anatolia was in chaos: the Byzantine and Seljuk Turk Empires clashed, territory was lost and regained, and the crusades further compounded the conflicts in the Levant.

Taking advantage of the turmoil, Mongols invaded Anatolia in 1241 AD. They attacked and defeated the Seljuk Empire, and just as suddenly, retreated in 1243 AD, leaving the Seljuk Turks in disarray and diminished in power and territory (see the pink area in Map 4).
